Aurora Time-Lapse Videos
An aurora (plural: auroras or aurorae) is a natural light display in the sky, particularly in the polar regions, caused by the collision of charged particles directed by the Earth's magnetic field. An aurora is usually observed at night and typically occurs in the ionosphere. It is also referred to as a polar aurora or, collectively, as polar lights. Auroras do occur deeper inside the polar regions, but these are infrequent and often invisible to the naked eye.

April 12 was already a huge day in space history twenty years before the launch of the first shuttle mission. On that day in 1961, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin (left, on the way to the launch pad) became the first human in space, making a 108-minute orbital flight in his Vostok 1 spacecraft. Newspapers like The Huntsville Times (right) trumpeted Gagarin's accomplishment.

Bobcat Climbs Forty Foot High Cactus To Escape Lion
Photographer Curt Fonger captured some great images of a bobcat that climbed a cactus. The photographer says the bobcat climbed the saguaro to escape a mountain lion.
"When he looked down at me, those beautiful amber eyes with those dark slits said it all. It was so refreshing to be able to personally witness this bobcat at that precise moment," Fonger said. "A story of survival. He wasn't nervous or frightened. Instead he had a personified "Calm after the Storm" demeanor. A lesson more of us could learn from."

The Sky In Motion
To a first approximation, most of the objects on the sky appear to move as if they were all fixed to the inside of a gigantic sphere with the Earth at its centre (the aptly named "celestial sphere").
That (apparent) movement is the result of the (very real) movement of the Earth in relation to the rest of the universe.

Gmail Motion April Fools' gag turned into reality using Kinect Sensor (video)
Using the Flexible Action and Articulated Skeleton Toolkit (FAAST) software and a Kinect sensor, USC ICT lab successfully turned Gmail motion April Fools’ joke into reality!
"This morning, Google introduced Gmail Motion, allowing users to control Gmail using gestures and body movement. However, for whatever reason, their application doesn't appear to work. So, we demonstrate our solution - the Software Library Optimizing Obligatory Waving (SLOOW) - and show how it can be used with a Microsoft Kinect sensor to control Gmail using the gestures described by Google."

Quote of the Day
People don't have fortunes left them in that style nowadays; men have to work and women to marry for money. It's a dreadfully unjust world.
