Tennis star Maria Sharapova, Los Angeles Lakers guard Sasha Vujacic engaged to be married

By Associated Press / October 22, 2010

Chance Yeh/PatrickMcMullan.com/Sipa Press/Newscom
Los Angeles Lakers guard Sasha Vujacic says he's engaged to marry Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova.

"We are engaged and are both really happy," Vujacic said Thursday night before the Lakers' exhibition game against Golden State. "It's good and now we can focus on other things."

The agent for three-time Grand Slam champion Sharapova confirmed the news in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

Vujacic said he proposed on the one-year anniversary of their first meeting at a friend's barbecue.

"It's was probably old school," Vujacic said. "I had to do it like a gentlemen."

The Slovenian guard returned to action Thursday, a week after getting a concussion when teammate Lamar Odom accidentally elbowed him in the face during practice. Vujacic averaged 2.8 points and 1.2 rebounds in 67 games for the Lakers last season, his sixth with the club.

Sharapova won her first major title at Wimbledon in 2004, when she was 17. She went on to win the 2006 U.S. Open and 2008 Australian Open and also reached No. 1 in the WTA rankings.

After shoulder surgery and an elbow injury forced her to miss time the past two seasons, Sharapova is currently ranked 18th.

Maria Sharapova holds the women's US Open trophy at the tennis tournament in New York in 2006. Sharapova defeated Belgium's Justine Henin-Hardenne 6-4, 6-4.

The Hobbit: Official Cast (Facts and Photos)

Warner Bros./ New Line have announced that Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Rob Kazinsky, Aidan Turner, Graham McTavish, John Callen, Stephen Hunter, Mark Hadlow and Peter Hambleton have officially joined the cast of THE HOBBIT.

According to the studio, Freeman is confirmed as Bilbo Baggins, the hero of the story. Richard Armitage is set to play Thorin Oakenshield, the leader of the Company of Dwarves which sets off to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from a thieving dragon.

Aidan Turner (“Being Human”) and Rob Kazinsky (TVs “EastEnders”) will play Kili and Fili; Graham McTavish is Dwalin; John Callen is Oin; Stephen Hunter is Bombur; Mark Hadlow is Dori; and Peter Hambleton stars as Gloin.

Bilbo Baggins: Martin John C. Freeman (born 8 September 1971) is an English actor. He is known for his roles as Tim Canterbury in the BBC's Golden Globe-winning comedy The Office (2001-2003), Arthur Dent in the film adaptation of Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005), and Dr. John Watson in Sherlock (2010).

It’s Official: The Hobbit Gets Its Bilbo Baggins — and Many Dwarfs!

Peter Jackson has his fearless burglar in the bag. Or should we say, the Baggins?

The studios behind The Hobbit officially confirmed Thursday that British actor Martin Freeman will be playing the titular Shire hero, Bilbo Baggins, in Jackson's two-part Lord of the Rings prequel.

"Despite the various rumours and speculation surrounding this role, there has only ever been one Bilbo Baggins for us," Jackson said in a statement.

But Bilbo isn't going it alone in today's casting news. MGM, New Line and Warner Bros. also rolled out a roster of actors who will be playing the hobbit's comrades in treasure hunting and Smaug slaying...

Brit Richard Armitage, who presumably will be seen in Captain America: The First Avenger long before The Hobbit's journey concludes, has signed on to play Thorin Oakenshield, head of the company of dwarves who are off to recapture his lost inheritance.

Rounding out the troop are Aidan Turner and Rob Kazinsky as Kili and Fili; Graham McTavish as Dwalin; John Callen as Oin; Stephen Hunter as Bombur; Mark Hadlow as Dori; and Peter Hambleton as Gloin. (You never know which one of them is going to be the next Dominic Monaghan!)

The manly group will gather in February—possibly in New Zealand, possibly elsewhere—to start shooting the long-awaited epic.

Church of the Intercession on the Nerl (Russia, 12th-century)

© glam Church of the Intercession on the Nerl (Церковь Покрова на Нерли

The Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin on the Nerl River (RussianЦерковь Покрова на Нерли, Tserkov Pokrova na Nerli) is an Orthodox church and a symbol of mediaeval Russia.
The church is situated at the confluence of Nerl and Klyazma Rivers in Bogolyubovo, 13 km north-east of the ancient capital of Vladimir.
The church was commissioned by Andrei Bogolyubsky. It was built in 12th-century. The monument is built in white stone, has one dome and four columns in the interior. For centuries, the memorial church greeted everyone approaching the palace at Bogolyubovo. In spring, the area would be flooded, and the church appeared as if floating on water. The church itself has not been touched by later generations, only the dome's shape slightly changed, and galleries-porches were built in 12th-century, rebuilt in 18th-century and then demolished. The walls are still covered with 12th-century carvings.
In 1992, the church was added to the UN World Heritage List as part of the site White Monuments of Vladimir and Suzdal.

GigaGalaxy Zoom - From The Eye To The Telescope

In the framework of the International Year of Astronomy 2009, ESO has launched a new project aimed at connecting the sky as seen by the unaided eye with that seen by hobby and professional astronomers.

The project, called GigaGalaxy Zoom, reveals three amazing, ultra-high-resolution images of the night sky that online stargazers can zoom in on and explore in an incredible level of detail. The reward is the most breathtaking dive ever made into our Galaxy, linking the sky seen by all with the cosmos studied by astronomers.

In this episode of ESOcast we will explore the unique and amazing GigaGalaxy Zoom project, which reveals the whole night sky as it appears with the unaided eye from one of the darkest deserts on Earth.

The project allows users to zoom in on a rich region of the Milky Way with the magnification offered by a hobby telescope and then to go one step further, using the power of a professional telescope to explore details of an iconic nebula.

Most of the photographs comprising the three GigaGalaxy Zoom images were taken from La Silla and Paranal, two of ESOs observing sites in Chile. The wonderful quality of the images is a testament to the splendour of the night sky at these ESO sites, which are the most productive astronomical observatories in the world.

---

ESOcast is produced by ESO, the European Southern Observatory. ESO, the European Southern Observatory, is the pre-eminent intergovernmental science and technology organisation in astronomy designing, constructing and operating the worlds most advanced ground-based telescopes.

Who You Gonna Call?

Improv Everywhere causes scenes of chaos and joy in public places. Created in August of 2001 by Charlie Todd, Improv Everywhere has executed over 100 missions involving tens of thousands of undercover agents. The group is based in New York City.
For one of their latest missions, they brought the movie Ghostbusters to life in the reading room of The New York Public Library at 42 Street. The 1984 movie begins with a scene in the very same room, so they figured it was time for the Ghostbusters to make an encore appearance.

Husky Dog Sings with iPAD

Mishka's debut appearance on TV. She got to sing with Kelly Rippa and Bette Midler. She also hung out with Adam Sandler in the green room.

What does Mishka mean?

Mishka is a Russian word. Misha or Mishka is a diminutive for the Russian male name Михаил (Mikhail - Michael). Most bears appearing in Russian fairy tales have this name, because it is similar to the Russian word for Bear - Медведь (Miedvied), of which the diminutive form is Mishka. Mishka means also teddy bear in Russian. [via]
By the way, there is another famous Mishka! Guess who ;)
